– Sweepers picked a baby boy who was abandoned at a rubbish dump at Nibo near Awka, the Adamawa state capital – The boy was in a critical condition when he was taken to the hospital – The governor’s wife, Ebelechukwu Obiano, adopted the child and named him Moses
On Friday morning, March 25, sweepers picked a baby boy who was abandoned at a rubbish dump at Nibo near Awka, the Adamawa state capital. The Punch reports that the governor’s wife, Ebelechukwu Obiano, immediately adopted the child and named him Moses. She described the baby as a perfect Easter gift to Ndi Anambra. Lawrence Ikeakor, the chief medical director of Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital Amaku in Awka, told the governor’s wife that the boy was in a critical condition when he was taken to the hospital. However, he noted that the boy was responding to treatment.
keakor added that the baby, who weighed 1.25 kilogram, would remain in the incubator for two weeks. Speaking with journalists, Mrs. Obiano noted that Moses was the third baby who was abandoned and rescued recently. She said that she would take full responsibility for the care and upkeep of him hrough her non-governmental organisationCaring Family Enhancement Initiative.
“As the mother of six million Ndi Anambra, it is my responsibility to care and nurture the baby who may eventually turn-out to be governor of the state in future. “On one hand I condemn the act of abandoning the baby but in another breath, I want to commend her for wrapping the baby well and ensuring that he did not suffocate. “Perhaps, she heeded my previous plea for mothers with unwanted babies to keep them where they can be seen and taken care of. They can drop them near governor’s lodge, fire station or a hospital,” she said.
Mrs. Obiano commended doctors, nurses and management of the hospital for professionalism and their efforts to ensure the survival of the baby. Earlier this year, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state and his wife Eunice also adopted a child. The baby girl was among the children the couple met during their visit to Mama Abayol Orphanage in Makurdi. The girl was brought to the orphanage after she had been found abandoned by her biological parents.
