THE Minister of State for Education, Prof Anthony Anwukah, has assured Nigeria of the federal government’s commitment to the improvement of science and technology in the country, especially in unity schools.

Speaking at the tour of facilities and commissioning of key infrastructure such as 1,200 bed-space girls hostel, staffroom and furniture at the Federal Science and Technical College, Yaba, Lagos State, Anwukah expressed depression over the obsolete and non-functional machines in the College’s work stations.

His words “A lot has been done in the education sector by this administration, and on several occasions,President Muhammadu Buhari has made it clear that there would be total emphasis on science and technology. “So it is really disheartening that a federal science and technology college can’t boast of functional modern machines. We have taken note and would ensure that these machines are replaced.”

Commending the Parents Teachers Association, PTA, of the college for undertaking such project, the Minister of State said “PTA was formed for the demonstration of goodwill in the well being of students, therefore, PTAs should not overtake the management of the school, but work in harmony with the schools’ management. While praising the PTA for its efforts, the Principal of the College, Rev Chris Ugorji, said the college is still faced with some daunting challenges such as over-populated classrooms, inadequate hostel accommodation which has forced the management to convert some classrooms to hostels, grossly inadequate science laboratory, among others.
